      retractable roof FAQ

As experts in outdoor shading, we are often asked questions about our products, their functionality, practicality, design process and much more. That’s why we thought it would be a good idea to put together our most frequently asked questions so that you can find all the answers you need in one place!

      1. Do you need planning permission for a retractable roof pergola?

Unfortunately, this question does not have a clear-cut answer. In most cases, no, you will not need planning permission for your retractable roof pergola, especially if you are installing this structure into a residential property. However, there are some guidelines that you need to adhere to.

For instance, you will need planning permission if you live in a conservation area, a property that is listed, or if you are planning to implement the structure at the front of your property. In addition, if your structure sits within 2 meters of the property boundary, you will be limited to a maximum height of 2.5 meters.

If you are ever unsure, refer to your local planning authority for extra guidance, especially for commercial projects. Our team can also help to assist you with this process.

      2. How long does the installation process take?

The process of installing a pergola with retractable roof varies massively depending on the size of the structure. Typically, a pergola takes around 3-5 days to install, taking less time the smaller the system. We aim to get your structure put together as quickly as possible so that you can start enjoying outdoor relaxation straight away! Contact us if you would like to get your installation underway.

      3. Can you install a retractable roof onto a rooftop or terrace?

Our retractable roof pergolas are highly versatile, meaning they can be installed in a range of different locations including rooftops and terraces. Some of our recent case studies installed a retractable pergola onto their rooftop, creating an effective year-round solution to weather control.

For example, the Farndon project installed a retractable fabric roof onto their large balcony area, so that they could maximise this space throughout the year. With the addition of vertical glass systems, you can even create an entirely new outdoor room, adding value to your property.

Another recent project of ours, York Street in Manchester installed a retractable louvre roof for their rooftop terrace, ensuring occupants could use this external space no matter the weather. If you have a rooftop or terrace project that you would like to kickstart, contact our team for assistance.

      4. What’s the difference between an awning and a pergola?

There are many variations amongst our range of retractable awnings and pergolas, however, the main difference between the two is that awnings are temporary structures whilst pergolas are permanent. Awnings are made from fabric material and can be attached to the end of your building (over a patio, terrace, or balcony), whereas pergolas are made from heavy-duty framing, posts and beams and can therefore be attached or detached to your property as a permanent structure.

Not only this but our retractable roof pergolas can be integrated with vertical glass systems which therefore prevents wind and rain from entering in any direction. However, under a retractable awning, you are only offered limited protection from wind and rain as this structure simply covers conditions overhead.

If you want a multi-functional weather-protecting structure, a retractable roof pergola is the answer for you. There is also more freedom to customise our retractable roof pergolas, creating bespoke systems. So, if you have a specific design in mind, our team can help to build this.

      5. Can my pergola be free-standing?

Leading on from the above question, retractable roof pergolas can be installed as a free-standing structure or attached as an extension to your property, depending on which you would prefer. Our project at Wood Green used a retractable louvre roof as a free-standing structure to create an outdoor kitchen area. Alternatively, you may take inspiration from our other case studies like The One Tun Pub which chose to integrate a retractable louvre roof within the courtyard of their property. The possibilities are endless!

      6. How large an area can I cover with a pergola?

Our standard size for a retractable roof pergola at Designer Shade Solutions is 5 meters by 7 meters, however, we can make bespoke structures which specifically fit the area you need. Perhaps you have a large outdoor area which needs covering? That is no issue, why not connect our structures together and create the ideal system that you need? Again, you will have to check the planning permission regulations for this, especially for commercial properties, but we have examples where large structures have been installed, so it can be done!

      7. Do pergolas add value to your property?

The quick answer to this question is yes, they do! Retractable roof pergolas are visually appealing, making your outdoor space look unique and beautiful which is a great selling point to potential buyers. As well as this, our pergolas can be used all year round, no matter the weather, which again helps buyers to visualise themselves enjoying this space, in every season. If you are looking for a way to add property value, which you can also benefit from in the meantime, a retractable roof pergola is an excellent idea.
